What is UNESCO?

“Building Peace in the minds of men and women “ 

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialised agency of the United Nations (UN). The organization   was founded on 16 November 1945.The organization consists of 195 Members and eight Associate Members.  The headquarters are located in Paris, France. The official languages of the UNESCO are English, French, Chinese, Spanish, Arabian and Russian. The Director-General of the organization is Irina Bokova. 

The main UNESCO`s aims: 

Ever since UNESCO was created, it has aimed to “contribute to peace and security by promoting collaboration among the nations through education, science, culture and communication in order to further universal respect for justice, for the rule of law and for the human rights and fundamental freedoms… ” UNESCO Constitution 

The main UNESCO`s mission:

  • to contribute to the building of peace
  • the eradication of poverty
  • sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the science, culture, communication and information
